about

This recording is from a sound installation was produced for Helen Pollock's installation 'Falls the Shadow' - a work dedicated to the New Zealand soldiers who fell at Pachendale.

The work was originally installed in the Auckland Museum in 2009, but is now being permanently installed in the Pachendale museum.

All sounds were made from items associated with the World War I (WWI) campaign. It started with recordings of Helen Pollock working with the clay used for the exhibition. This clay was a mixture of clay fom Pachaendale and Aotearoa New Zealand. Then millitary items including (but not exclusively) artillary shells, bullet casings, shovels, corregated iron, barbed wire were recorded.

All objects were performed by Chris O'Connor and recorded by Andrew McMillan. McMillan then processed, arranged and mixed the sounds to create the final soundscape for the exhibition which is presented here in this recording.
